FIFTH GENERATION

ZADOCK HAWKINS Book Information

354. Lucenia5 OWENS (Lucenia "Cena"4 HAWKINS, Zadock3 HAWKINS, Zadock2 HAWKINS, Zadock1 HAWKINS) was born about 1853 in Indiana, USA. Although her husband's biography gives her name as Lucinda, other sources spell it Lucenia, the same as her mother's name. She appeared on the1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses with her parents in Marshall Co., Indiana.

She was married to Moses A. KIRKHAM (son of Moses A. KIRKHAM and Elizabeth WARREN) on 3 Nov 1871 in Peoria, Franklin Co., Kansas. Moses A. KIRKHAM was born on 27 Jun 1851 in Davis Co., Iowa. His biography places his birth in 1861. However, his marriage record indicates he was born in 1850. Census records place his birth about 1851. Lucenia OWENS and Moses A. KIRKHAM had the following children:

child+987 i. Geneva6 KIRKHAM.
child988 ii. Tyrena6 KIRKHAM was born about 1874 in Kansas, USA. She appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census with her parents in Sumner Co., Kansas.
child989 iii. Pearl6 KIRKHAM was born in Mar 1880 in Kansas, USA. She appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census with her parents in Sumner Co., Kansas. Our book, published in 2005, reported that she had died by the time the 1900 U.S. Census was recorded. This was because her mother, Lucenia (Owens) Kirkham, was reported in that census to be the mother of three children, only one of whom was living. Since Pearl's sister Tyrena was living at the time, we inferred that Tyrena's two sisters had died. However, the evidence that Pearl's sister Geneva lived until 1915 confirms that the 1900 U.S. Census misreported the information on Lucenia Kirkham's children. We suspect that someone misinterpreted the census taker's question about how many children she had and how many were living to mean how many children were living in the household at the time. Since the evidence establishes that the census misreported the information about Lucenia's children, we can no longer conclude that Pearl had died by the time the 1900 U.S. Census was recorded.
