Gary Fredrickson, 21, was instantly killed in an automobile-train accident which occurred at 3:05 p.m. Thursday at the Minneapolis, Northfield and Southern railroad crossing of Dakota County Road 13, 2 1/2 miles west of Castle Rock. Mr. Fredrickson was thrown from the car, his death being caused by head injuries.
So severe was the crash that the car, a 1958 Chevrolet sedan, was completely wrecked, the engine landing about 20 feet from the mangled automobile framework. The car was thrown about 35 feet from the point of impact. The body was found at the rear of the car.
Mr. Fredrickson had been headed west toward the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Fredrickson, whose farm is about a mile west of the railroad crossing. The M.N.S. freight was southbound. Frank Mika of Minneapolis, the engineer, estimating the speed of the train at about 30 mph. The car struck the side of the train engine.
The Heil Ambulance was called to the scene before it was realized that the accident was fatal. Dakota county deputies, who investigated the accident, did not determine the cause of the accident. Although the crossing is somewhat blind for eastbound traffic, the view of the tracks is clear for westbound drivers. Skidmarks of about 30 feet in length were visible on the blacktop road.
