THIRD GENERATION

ZADOCK HAWKINS Book Information

27. Thomas3 HAWKINS (Thomas2 HAWKINS, Zadock1 HAWKINS) was born in 1803. He died in 1879. Although there is little doubt about who were the parents of both Thomas Hawkins and Abigail Race, the names of their children are not certain. Those listed here, with the exception of Henry and Aaron, were provided by a descendant of Thomas Albert Hawkins, who asserted they were the children of Thomas Hawkins and Abigail Race and that they lived in Freeport, Stephenson Co., Illinois. Since evidence in Pendleton and Grant Counties, Kentucky, indicates that Thomas and Abigail removed to Illinois, and since the names of some of the children, especially Moses, suggested they were named after other family members, I have placed the children with Thomas and Abigail (Race) Hawkins in accordance with claims of the descendant of Thomas Albert Hawkins. Additional circumstantial evidence has been found that supports the placement of these children in the family of Thomas and Abigial (Race) Hawkins. A man named Sandy Race provided surety for a Guardianship paper filed in August 1842 in Pendleton Co., Kentucky. This Sandy Race was reported to be Abigail's brother in which case Sandy Hawkins clearly was named after Abigail's brother.

Complicating this conclusion to associate these children with Thomas and Abigail (Race) Hawkins is the discovery that the 1850 census indicates that Thomas was born in New Jersey around 1802 and Abigail in Ohio around 1811. A case can be made for Abigail's birth in Ohio. But it is difficult to explain how Thomas might have been born in New Jersey, especially since another in the same household was assigned Kentucky as her birthplace. It is entirely possible that his birth location was recorded incorrectly. Interestingly, the ages of Thomas and Abigail on that census are entirely consistent with the birth years of the Thomas and Abigail who were from Kentucky. Given the high likelihood that the children in this family were in fact named after close family members back in Pendleton Co., Kentucky, I am leaving the children named here with the family of Thomas and Abigail (Race) Hawkins. However, additional research is required to fully resolve the inconsistency posed by the 1850 census.

He was married to Abigail RACE (daughter of Moses RACE and Sarah TOMLIN) on 2 Oct 1829 in Grant Co., Kentucky, USA. They were reported to have lived in Freeport, Stephenson Co., Illinois. Abigail RACE was born in 1812. She died in 1874. Thomas HAWKINS and Abigail RACE had the following children:
