ZADOCK HAWKINS Book Information

384. Sarah Jane5 HAWKINS (William W.4 HAWKINS, Zadock3 HAWKINS, Zadock2 HAWKINS, Zadock1 HAWKINS) was born on 15 May 1849 in Starke Co., Indiana, USA. She appeared on the 1850 U.S. Census with her parents in Marshall Co., Indiana. In 1860 and 1870 she appeared with them on the census in North Bend Twp., Starke Co., Indiana. She died on 6 Jun 1892 in Custer, Eden Twp., Mason Co., Michigan, USA. She died of consumption (tuberculosis). Since the death record of Martin Garn reports that he was buried in Eden Cemetery, and since Martin and Sarah Jane were buried in the same cemetery, we reported in our Hawkins book of 2005 that they were buried in the Eden Township Cemetery. However, we later located an index of the Lakeside Cemetery, also in Eden Twp., which indicates both were buried there. A descendant of Martin Garn and Sarah Jane Hawkins has verified that their grave markers are in Lakeside Cemetery in Eden Township.

A record, probably from an obituary or funeral record, about Sarah written by G. H. Barrett reads:

Sarah Jane Garn was born in Indiana & married Martin Garn Sept 1, 1870. She died June 6, 1892 at age 43.
They moved to Wexford County in the Spring of 1885, and in April 1892 moved to Eden Mi.
In April 1888 while Bro. L. P. Lawton was holding a revival meeting at the Dayhuff school house, the Holy Spirit did his office work in converting Bro. & Sis Garn. She held fast the profession of faith unto the end.
For over 1 year while consumption was wasting the physical, Sis Garn was "drawing water with joy from the wells of salvation["], saying at the last, "Instant death will be instant glory."
She leaves a husband, five sons and three daughters.
The writer conducted the service assisted by R. S. McClain.
Text I Cor. 15:55
Signed: G. H. Barrett

She was married to Martin GARN (son of Abraham GARN and Susan GARN) on 1 Sep 1870 in Starke Co., Indiana, USA. A handwritten marriage record reads as follows:

Martin Garn and Sarah Jane Hawkins were united by me in the holy bonds of Matrimony at W. W. Hawkins the 1st day of Sept in the year of our Lord 1870 In the presence of T. J. Garn and W. W. Hawkins. Signed E. E. Randar

Martin and Sarah appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census in Beatrice Twp., Gage Co., Nebraska. Twenty years later, after Sarah had died, Martin appeared, unmarried, on the 1900 U.S. Census with several of his children in Eden Twp., Mason Co., Michigan. Martin GARN was born on 21 Jun 1845 in Sandusky, Ohio. He appeared on the 1850 U.S. Census with his parents in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. Twenty years later, just prior to his marriage, he appeared on the U.S. Census with his father and step mother in Union Twp., Marshall Co., Indiana.
