SECOND GENERATION4. James K.2 STEWART (Benjamin1 STEWART) was born in NOV 1844 in Pennsylvania, USA. There is some uncertainty about the year he was born. The early census records suggest he was born before 1844, while the later census records suggest he was born after 1844. He appeared on the 1850 U.S. Census with his parents in Erwin Twp., Steuben Co., New York. Ten years later he appeared on the census again with his parents, this time in Chester Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan. He died on 19 JUN 1904. He was buried in Polkton Cemetery, Coopersville, Ottawa Co., Michigan. He was married to Elizabeth before
1866 in Ottawa Co., Michigan, most likely. The marriage date and place of James
and Elizabeth are an estimate based on the date and place of birth of their first
child and their residence in the 1870 census. They appeared on the 1880 U.S.
Census in Chester Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan. Elizabeth
was born about 1849 in Ohio, USA. James K. STEWART and Elizabeth had the following
children:
He was married to Nancy
ROGERS about 1872 in Ottawa Co., Michigan, most likely. The marriage date and
place of James and Nancy are an estimate based on the date and place of birth
of their first child and their residence in the 1880 U.S. Census. They appeared
on that census in Chester Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan.
Nancy ROGERS was born about 1847 in New York, USA. She died on 26 SEP
1882 in Chester Twp., Ottawa Co., Michigan, USA. She died of consumption (tuberculosis).
James K. STEWART and Nancy ROGERS had the following children:
He was married to Elizabeth
about 1897 in Ottawa Co., Michigan, most likely. Elizabeth's surname was probably
UPLINGER. James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1900 U.S. Census in the household
of James' son-in-law, Milo ROGERS and James' daughter, Emmagine in Wright Twp.,
Ottawa Co., Michigan. This Elizabeth is clearly not the same wife, Elizabeth,
who was Emmagine's mother. The ages in the censuses are significantly wrong.
Elizabeth was born in APR 1864 in Michigan, USA.
He was married to Gusta WESTPHALL (daughter of
William WESTPHALL) in Waupaca Co., Wisconsin, most likely. James and Gusta
boarded with William WESTPHAL in Marion Village, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin in the
1900 U.S. Census. Ms. The appearance of James in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with
a wife named Elizabeth on the 1900 U.S. Census and a wife named Gusta in Waupaca
Co., Wisconsin, on that same census is a strong indication that he was married
to two women at the same time.
