5. John Washington² GARN (Abraham¹ GARN) was born on 8 Mar 1834 in Ohio, USA. This date is derived from his death record. Another record suggests his birth may have been in 1835. He appeared on the 1850 U.S. Census with his parents in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. He died on 2 Feb 1916 in Burr Oak, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, USA. He was buried at Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak Twp.

His obituary reads:
JOHN W. GARN
John W. Garn was born in Sandusky, County, Ohio, March 8, 1835 and departed this life February 2, 1916, aged 81 years, 10 months and 25 days.
On August 20, 1863, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Hammel [sic] and to this union was born ten children, Minnie E., David F., Samuel S., James W., Ida M., Anna F., Lola A., Annis E., Emma Blanch, Maidie B. All survive except Ida May, who died in infancy.
There are also seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
After a long, useful and active life Mr. Garn was called home, and we shall miss his genial smile and hearty hand-shake.
He was a great lover of his own home and in his younger days enjoyed no sport so well as hunting and fishing.
As a neighbor he was never known to refuse kndness and would share his last crust with a friend.
The sympathy of the community is extended to the widow and family Maythe sheltering arms of our all-loving Father be thrown around the sorrowing ones.
The funeral, Ref. Steffe and Undertaker Renshaw officiating, was held from the M. E. church in this place last Saturday afternoon. Burial in the village cemetery.

He was married to Rebecca HUMMEL in 1863 in Richland Center, Indiana. Rebecca HUMMEL was born on 19 Feb 1843 in Burr Oak, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, USA. Although the reference indicates Rebecca was born in Michigan, her marriage near Marshall Co., Indiana and near Burr Oak in Marshall Co. suggests that she may have been born in the Burr Oak in Indiana instead of Michigan. She died on 1 Mar 1923 in Sturgis, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, USA. John Washington GARN and Rebecca HUMMEL had the following children:
