GARN Book Information

121. Abraham7 GARN (John6 GARN, Conrad5 GERN, Johann Adam4 GERN, Johannes3 GERN, David2 GERN, Johannes1 GERN) was born on 5 Sep 1810 in Buffalo Mills, Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. He also appears as Abram GARN in the records. He if mentioned in the will of his father, who left him $10.00 in the will. He appeared on the 1840 U.S. Census in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. He died on 29 Jan 1890 in Burr Oak, Marshall Co., Indiana, USA. He was a farmer.

The Obituary of Abram Garn as it appeared in The Republican, February 7, 1890 reads as follows:
Abram Garn for over 31 years a resident of Burr Oak Flats, died Wednesday night of last week, January 29th, aged 80 years, 4 months and 24 days.
Deceased was born in Bedford County, Pa., Sept. 10, 1810, went to Ohio from Pennsylvania and came from there to Marshall county in 1858, settled on the farm where he died and where he had ever since lived, near the village of Burr Oak, in Union Township. He was the father of 15 children, nine of whom are now living; John in Fulton county, David, in West township, George, Mandas, P. J. and B. F. in Union township, Martin, in Michigan, Joshua in Nebraska and Mrs. Sarah E. Weirman, in Paulding county, Ohio. All of these children are prominent citizens in the communities in which they reside.
Abram Garn was an honest, industrious, quiet citizen, respected by all who knew him. He was twice married; his first wife died in 1866, his second is still living, aged 72 years. His death was caused by rheumatism and softening of the brain. The remains were interred at the Voreis cemetery [Burr Oak cemetery], Friday, Rev. Mr. Tracy and Rev. Mr. Dustin conducting the funeral services, which were largely attended. Deceased was a member of the Evangelical church. All of his children except Joshua and Martin were at his bedside when he died.

He was married to Susanna7 GARN (daughter of John GARN and Susanna CABLE) about 1832 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, USA, most likely. We are aware that McBride and Capener (p. 32) give 1828 as the year of Abraham and Susan's marriage. We are convinced this is incorrect for several reasons. Susanna would have been only 13 years old, which would have been young to marry. Her father's will, written 31 August 1832 does not indicate that she was married, and the 1830 U.S. Federal Census of Abraham's father shows a male in the household who of the right age to be Abraham, suggesting that Abraham, who would have been about to turn 20 years old, was still in the home Also in the home of Abraham's father was an under 20 female, who would have been Abraham's younger sister, Catherine. Although Abraham's obituary reported he had 15 children in all, there is no reason to place at the beginning the ones who were not named in any records. We believe the two unnamed children were born in between some of the others where there are larger age differences between children or possibly were twins who did not survive. We also believe that Abraham and Susanna married in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, because there is no marriage record in Sandusky Co., Ohio, where one appears for the marriage of Abraham's sister to Susanna's brother.

Abraham and Susan appeared on the 1850 U.S. Census in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio. Susanna7 GARN was born on 2 Dec 1815 in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. There is little doubt that her maiden name was also GARN. Death records of at least seven of her children have been located. Although the mother's name was unknown on several of those death records, at least four listed the mother's maiden name as some variation of Susan with the last name Garn. No record of another maiden name has been found for her. She died on 11 Jan 1866 in Burr Oak, Marshall Co., Indiana, USA. She is named in her father's will. Abraham GARN and Susanna GARN had the following children:

child357 i. Josiah GARN.

He was married to Lydia BAUGHMAN on 18 Nov 1866 in Summit Co., Ohio, USA. They appear on the 1870 U.S. Census in Union Twp., Marshall Co., Indiana. Abraham, along with several of his children, moved from Indiana to Nebraska some time after the 1870 U.S. Census because he appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census with Lydia in Beatrice Twp., Gage Co., Nebraska. His sons Martin, Joshua and Benjamin Franklin Garn were also in the township in the 1880 U.S. Census. That census corroborates other information that claims he was born in Pennsylvania. However, it also indicates that Abraham's father was born in Germany and his mother in Pennsylvania. He probably moved back to Indiana soon after the census because his son Martin moved back before 1 January 1881. Lydia BAUGHMAN was born on 28 Jul 1818 in Ohio, USA. She died on 24 Aug 1892.
