He appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census with his parents in Austin Twp., MeCosta Co., Michigan. Twenty years later he appeared on the census with his brother's family in Aetna Twp., Missaukee Co., Michigan.

There are conflicting birthdates for him. His descendants give 5 May 1879, the 1900 U. S. Census gives May 1877 and the Stewart-Hillard Reunion Papers give 6 May 1878.

According to his daughter, his birth certificate was recorded under the name Lytton C. Hillard. He is listed in the 1880 census under the name Lytton. However, his second marriage was under the name Cassious L. Hillard and his death record uses Cassious as his first name.
He died on 27 JAN 1955 in Cadillac, Wexford Co., Michigan, USA. He was buried in Cadillac, Michigan.
