1340. Claud Edwin¹⁰ HAWKINS (Hattie Ellen⁹ GARN, Martin⁸ GARN, Susanna⁷ GARN, John⁶ GARN, Johannes⁵ GERN, Johann Adam⁴ GERN, Johannes³ GERN, David² GERN, Johannes¹ GERN) was born on 21 Jan 1895 in Manton, Wexford Co., Michigan, USA. He appeared on the 1900 U.S. Census with his natural mother and step father, Frank Martin, in the home of his maternal grandfather, Martin Garn, in Eden Twp., Mason Co., Michigan. Ten years later he appeared on the U.S. Census with John R. Hawkins, a brother of his maternal grandmother, with whom he went to live some time after his mother and grandfather had died. At that time, they were living in Colfax Twp., Wexford Co., Michigan. Based on information provided by several of Claud's cousins, Claud's natural mother was Hattie Garn and his father was an American Indian. His father most likely was not Frank Martin, the man Hattie later married. The tradition among Claud's cousins was that Frank Martin was not Claud's father. Frank Martin no longer took responsibility for Claud after Hattie's death. Also, no mention is made of Claud in Frank Martin' s obituary whereas other children are mentioned suggesting that he was not Frank Martin's child. Claud took the surname Hawkins after living with John R. Hawkins for a time. It is not known if John R. Hawkins actually formally adopted Claud. He resided about 1948 in Marathon, Florida. He died in Jan 1976.

He was married to Gladys May NICHOLS (daughter of Orlo NICHOLS and Mabel CHIPMAN) about 1916. Claud and Gladys appeared on the 1920 U.S. Census in Colfax Twp., Wexford Co., Michigan. Gladys May NICHOLS was born on 6 May 1896 in Grand Ledge, Eaton Co., Michigan. Claud Edwin HAWKINS and Gladys May NICHOLS had the following children:

+1504 iii. Doris May¹¹ HAWKINS was born on 21 May 1920 in Meauwataka, Wexford Co., Michigan, USA. She died about 1948 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co., Michigan, USA. She died at the University of Michigan Hospital.
