177. John Ickes⁸ GARN (Christian M.⁷ GARN, Frederick⁶ GARN, Johannes⁵ GERN, Johann Adam⁴ GERN, Johannes³ GERN, David² GERN, Johannes¹ GERN) was born on 27 Oct 1833 in Union Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 5 Dec 1910 in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio, USA. McBride and Capener report that his middle name was Ickes, which is confirmed by the death record of his daughter Hannah.

An obituary reports his brith in Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, and that his parents were C. M. Garn and Elizabeth Ickes. It also reports, that his ancestors were originally from Holland, which is not true for his Garn ancestors. It also reports that he married Maria Garn but that she was not related; note that we have shown that John and Maria were second cousins through Maria's father and third cousins through Maria's mother.

John was a Probate Judge in Sandusky County for three years from 1894 to 1897. He had been a Justice of the Peace for about 15 years in Millersvile prior to his election as Probate Judge. He was also a farmer in Jackson Twp., on land that cleared himself. He also worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Millersville. His obituary reports that he was the father of six daughters and one son, with five daughters surviving him.

He was married to Maria⁸ GARN (daughter of John GARN and Catherine GARN) on 25 Jan 1855 in Millersville, Sandusky Co., Ohio, USA. Maria⁸ GARN was born on 25 Apr 1835 in Sandusky Co., Ohio, USA. She died on 1 May 1921 in Jackson Twp., Sandusky Co., Ohio, USA. John Ickes GARN and Maria GARN had the following children:
