He fought in the Union army during the Civil War, enlisting in Co. B of Purnell's Legion of the Maryland Volunteer Infantry on 18 September 1861 in Baltimore. While in the service, he got typhoid fever and died at Catlett's Station, near Warrenton. His mother's application for a pension based on his service reports that he left no widow or children.
